Constitution Revision Commission adopts Commission Rules; postpones June 22 public hearing

Wednesday, June 21, 2017   (0 Comments)

The Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) met on June 6 in Orlando to consider and formally adopt the CRC’s Rules for 2017-2018. As noted in the June 7 press release following the meeting, these rules, which are based on those of the 1997-1998 body, will guide the CRC’s work going forward in proposing revisions to Florida’s Constitution. A recording of the June 6 meeting, along with recordings of all CRC meetings and public hearings held thus far, is available to view via The Florida Channel’s video library dedicated to the CRC.

The CRC also announced last week that the June 22 public hearing, scheduled to take place in Central Florida, has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.

The remainder of the proposed calendar is as follows:

  • July and August 2017 – Voluntary training on various procedural and substantive issues.
  • August 23 or 24, 2017 – Final public hearing of the first phase of public hearings in Broward County.
  • Late August to December 2017 – Committee meetings (being considerate of the Legislature’s committee schedule and fall holidays).
  • Late February and March 2018 – Public hearing phase two; we will take public input on the work of the Commission up to that point, prior to any votes on final passage.
  • March and April – Full Commission meetings for the purpose of hearing proposals.
  • May 10, 2018 – Final report due to the Florida Department of State.

The Honorable Ken Burke, CPA (Pinellas), Chair of the Forerunners Courageous Committee, will be in contact with local Clerks and Comptrollers to coordinate participation at the public hearings once details of these meetings are finalized. Clerks and Comptrollers will also be notified when any new events are scheduled or any additional details are provided for upcoming events.

Note that information continues to be added to the CRC’s official website, which may be visited at: Clerks and Comptrollers can sign up to receive press releases and publications directly from the CRC by creating an account via the website and opting to track these from the CRC Media page.
