Clerk Spotlight: Carolyn Timmann

Monday, April 17, 2023
If there was an ideal career path to have prior to becoming a clerk, Carolyn Timmann’s professional roadmap would be hard to beat.

Clerk Timmann has had a long and proud career dedicated to public service. She began as a judicial assistant and county law librarian, then served as a legislative aide before joining the Attorney General's office, managing special projects and multi-state case coordination, and organizing the administrative side of the new Solicitor General's office. From there, she joined the Executive Office of the Governor as Deputy Chief of Staff before moving on to the next administration as a division director and leading the Governor’s Office of Open Government.

All through these incredible opportunities, Clerk Timmann was certain of two future goals: she wanted to return to Martin County where she started her career in public service, and she wanted to run for the office of Clerk of Court and Comptroller there. In 2012, when she learned the longtime Clerk for Martin County was retiring, she resigned from the Governor's Office and returned home to successfully run for the office she had thought about for so many years.

Her experience in state government, the important relationships she fostered over time, and her love for solving problems for her community and its officials, made her a perfect fit for the role. Among her many awards and accomplishments, Clerk Timmann was recognized as Clerk of the Year for 2015-16, and she was selected to serve on the Constitutional Revision Commission in 2017.  Clerk Timmann cherishes the ability to connect critical resources and apply her skills to statewide issues that create positive outcomes for the people of Florida.

The Martin County Clerk’s Office has implemented many new services since she was elected, offering more convenience and a better customer experience for residents. Most notable among them, her office prioritized property fraud alerts, streamlined the jury process, enhanced access to historic and archival records, completely overhauled the process for records requests of all types, implemented an award winning PAFR, and hosted numerous passport events.

In 2022, her office was awarded the coveted Triple Crown for financial reporting from the GFOA.  Before the end of 2023, Clerk Timmann is set on improving access to historical records, increasing enrollments in property fraud alerts, integrating additional technology for the jury check-in and payment process, and further increasing online access to official and court records in preparation for Martin County’s centennial celebration.

With all her professional accomplishments, Clerk Timmann is just as proud of her life outside of work. The surviving spouse of a highly decorated and respected law enforcement officer, Clerk Timmann has two amazing and driven children. Her daughter, Shannon, is an attorney in the DC area who specializes in media and defamation law, and her son, Morgan, is studying Economics at Florida Atlantic University and co-authors an Inflation Report. There is never a lack of robust conversation among the Timmann household.

Clerk Timmann also has several interests apart from public service, including American history and animals. She enjoys helping people solve genealogical mysteries to preserve the stories of the lives of real people, and it should come as no surprise that she’s a member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Nature and critters of all sizes have been a part of her life since childhood. She has an educational and work background in animal and veterinary science from her time at the University of Georgia. She’s created natural habitats and raised snapping turtles, toads, exotic birds, butterflies, praying mantises, woolly caterpillars, and salamanders. She stays busy training her German Shepherd and also has experience as a livestock judge, training horses, and herding cows.
