Gary Knowles worked for the Taylor County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller's Office for eight years before considering running for Clerk. With a sense that no one else was interested in the role, he started learning everything he could to prepare for the position.
While Gary’s first role in the Taylor County Clerk and Comptroller's Office was within the Finance Department, he has held several positions and performed essentially every service provided by the office, eventually becoming the Senior Deputy Clerk. His focus and hard work paid off, and he was elected Taylor County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller in 2020.
Clerk Knowles has set forth several priorities to better serve his constituents since he was elected. Under his leadership, the Taylor County Clerk and Comptroller's Office has completed indexing official records between 1957 and 1981, established a link from the local property appraiser’s map to property deeds in official records for customer convenience, published the first citizen’s guide to Taylor County finances titled "Money Doesn't Grow on Trees," and implemented paperless casefiles in the Traffic and Court Criminal Divisions.
Over the next year, Clerk Knowles is focused on building on this progress by further improving services and access to the public.
Clerk Knowles is a lifelong resident of Taylor County and has cultivated a close relationship with the community over the years. Of all the aspects he finds fulfilling about the role of Clerk, he most enjoys serving residents and preserving their trust in the Clerk's Office.
To give back to their community last year, the Taylor County Clerk and Comptroller's Office held a Domestic Violence Shelter Fundraiser and donation drive for supplies during October, raising $1,000 and collecting many items such as sheets, detergent, and cleaning supplies.
Clerk Knowles and his wife, Amy, have been married for 25 years and have two daughters, both of whom are currently in college.
