CJJIS Council Holds Regular Meeting and Elects New Chair and Vice-Chair
Monday, October 2, 2023
Kicking off this year’s Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) CJIS Training Symposium, the Criminal and Juvenile Justice Information Systems (CJJIS) Council held an in-person meeting on Monday, September 25, 2023, in Orlando, to receive a number of project updates related to ongoing criminal justice initiatives in Florida and to elect new council leadership. An agenda and related presentations for last week’s meeting may be accessed here.
During the meeting, FDLE professional staff provided an update to the council on a couple of items of specific interest to Clerks:- The revised Florida Uniform Statute Table, with changes made based on work completed by the 2023 Florida Legislature, was approved by the council for publication and will be made available soon to interested parties.
- FDLE continues working toward implementing the requirements made by CS/CS/SB 376 (2023) related to the automatic sealing of criminal history records and making confidential and exempt related court records. Bureau Chief Mary Jackson, who is leading the project for FDLE, spoke to the partnership with Clerks of the Circuit Court and Florida Court Clerks & Comptrollers (FCCC), and the department is currently awaiting a cost estimate for any necessary technical changes that may be needed for their systems.
The final item the council considered was the election of new leadership, following the conclusion of Citrus County Sheriff Mike Prendergast’s service as chair. Effective immediately, Roosevelt Sawyer, Jr., Chief Information Officer, Office of the State Courts Administrator, will serve as chair of the CJJIS Council, with Police Chief Charles L. Broadway, Clermont Police Department, serving as vice-chair. Both Chair Sawyer and Vice-Chair Broadway are longtime members of the CJJIS Council.
FCCC thanks the Honorable Carolyn Timmann (Martin) for her continued service as a member and former chair of the CJJIS Council. Clerk Timmann has served on the council, representing all Clerks of the Circuit Court, since being appointed by Governor Rick Scott in March of 2014.
The next regular meeting of the CJJIS Council is scheduled via teleconference for Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 9:30 a.m., ET. For additional information and updates, please visit the CJJIS Council homepage.
